If you don’t know where you are going, how do you expect to arrive? How will you know when you have arrived? I have never gone on an airplane without my flight having a clear destination. I know where I am going, the altitude I will be flying at, the temperature of the destination, and the precise time that I will be arriving. When you fly, your journey is planned with crystal clear-precision.
In the same way, a detailed VISION of your future is like a compass for your life – a destination of where you are going. If you don’t have a vision for your life, you are like a raft adrift at sea – going nowhere.
A vision is something that you see that hasn’t happened YET. Like flying, your destination hasn’t happened yet, but you know it will. You are 100% confident that you will arrive.
Life should be the same way. As you fly with confidence knowing that you will eventually arrive at your destination, you need to apply the same level of confidence to your vision. KNOW THAT YOU WILL ARRIVE.
The Vision Board
The first step in any journey is to know exactly where you are going. A vision board is a visual representation of your destination. At the beginning of every year, I meticulously build a vision board knowing exactly what my destination is – both in the new year and beyond.
My vision board includes a variety of aspects related to my life; including family, self-improvement, fitness, career success, and travel. I have heard it said that only mediocre people die at their best, because leaders are constantly striving to improve.
Each vision board represents a new destination. Just as a pilot will take-off to a new destination each time they arrive, we too should never have a final destination. Life-long learning and growth is a habit of excellence.
In addition to being a visual representation of your destination, a vision board has the ability to defeat negative thoughts. Each of us has the ability to control our thoughts. On a daily basis, we give power to the thoughts that we choose to give power to. When negativity begins creeps into our thought life, a simple glance or look at the vision board acts like a blast of Vitamin C, erasing any momentum those thoughts had. When you have a clear vision of your future, setbacks only add fuel to your fire. It is only those people who are adrift at sea with no purpose or destination in which a storm will harm. Lesson: know your destination.
Make Your Vision Board
Don’t take my word for it, here is a clip of Steve Harvey describing the significance that vision boards have had on his success.
To create a vision board, you will need:
- poster paper/canvas board
- glue stick
- clear mind to think
A vision board is a collage. Look at mine as an example. Yours can have more or less pictures. Build your board to suit your destination for both the new year and life. Do not rush through the assignment! Part-time commitment will deliver part-time results!
When you are done, place your vision board in a high-traffic area of your house so you will see it many times a day, constantly being reminded of your destination. Next-level thinkers may even want to use it as their background on their computer or phone. It is up to you.
Enjoy your journey.
